about

Special thanks to Nate Holdren, author of Injury Impoverished, for making me aware of this history. Check out his book that has a complete list of names we lost in the Cherry, Illinois Coal Mine Disaster of 1909.

lyrics

Samuel Howard knew he would surely die at the age of twenty-three
He was a miner in the tunnels for the St. Paul Company
On Saturday, November thirteen nineteen o'nine
There was a fire in the dark hole and Samuel stopped to write

The only thing that I regret is that my brother is down here
And I cannot help my mother if we both disappear
And no one can remember all two hundred fifty-nine
All the names we lost in the Cherry Coal Mine

Mrs. Thomas Bailiff died of grief said the county tribune
And her bare knees hit the gravel when she heard the news
And when she died her kinfolk said she was a miner's wife she
knew
One of these days the tunnels would swallow her up too

And the only thing that I regret is my brother is down here
And I cannot help my mother if we both disappear
And no one can remember all two hundred fifty-nine
All the names we lost in the Cherry Coal Mine

Please add Thomas Bailiff's widow's name to the two hundred fifty-nine
All the names we lost, in the Cherry Coal Mine
